Early March 2018 (Chrome 65 release): Links that open the desired destination in a new tab but redirect the main window to an unwanted page will no longer work. This will prevent redirects where a page takes you to a new one for no apparent reason. Late January 2018 (Chrome 64 release): All redirects originating from third-party iframes will show an infobar instead of redirecting. Google is launching the Abusive Experience Report to help site owners check if any abusive experiences have been found on their site (issues left unaddressed for 30 days will trigger the prevention of new windows and tabs). Early January 2018: Chrome’s pop-up blocker will prevent sites that send users to unintended destinations from opening new windows or tabs. Here is Chrome’s current timeline for three new protections against redirects: Links to third-party websites disguised as play buttons or other site controls, transparent overlays on websites that capture all clicks and open new tabs or windows, or just redirects that happen out of the blue - Chrome will try to stop them all next year.

As such, the company has announced a series of protections designed to fight deceptive behaviors intentionally designed to mislead web users. Google today shared that 1 out of every 5 feedback reports from Chrome users on desktop mention encountering some type of unwanted content. Now the team is adding a new target to its list: unwanted redirects. Google Chrome is going to war against low-quality ads and autoplaying content with sound next year.
